Surgeries are schedule on Mondays, and our surgery schedule usually fill a week in advance of any given surgery date. The actual time for which your surgery will be schedule is often dependent upon the type and duration of your procedure, as well as the other procedures scheduled that day.
A pre-op nurse will call you the day before your surgery to discuss your surgery including expected arrival time. The normal arrival time is one hour before surgery.
Antibiotics are not normally given before surgery. However, they may be ordered by Dr. Spears during surgery to be given intravenously. Antibiotics may be prescribed after surgery if there is the possibility of developing an infection.
When you arrive home take two of the prescribed tablets four hours after the last medication given at the hospital (confirm dosage on bottle). During the first 24 hours take your medication every four to six hours, or as prescribed by Dr. Spears. Ideally we recommend picking up your prescription (if prescribed medication) prior to your surgery to simplify your surgery day and insure your comfort after the procedure.
No, do NOT remove your brace at all. Do NOT take it off at night in bed unless otherwise instructed by Dr. Spears.
Crutches must be used at all times for your safety if prescribed by Dr. Spears.
Do not remove dressings or alter them in any manner. Do not get dressings wet. You may shower as long as you keep the dressings dry. If you do get your dressing wet, please call the office.
Your first post-op appointment is typically scheduled two days after your procedure. For example, if your surger is on Monday, we will see you in the clinic on Wednesday for this appointment.
Yes, but please call the office with any questions regarding excessive bloody dressings.
You may NOT drive while taking pain medication, or use your operative foot or leg while driving, unless otherwise advised by Dr. Spears.
Each surgical case is different with respect to returning to work and should be discussed at your pre-op visit with Dr. Spears.
